DL blanks W-DC

The Detroit Lakes girls' tennis team hit both ends of the spectrum of the shutout Monday and Tuesday.

The Lakers blanked host Wadena-Deer Creek 7-0 Monday, but were shutout by Bemidji, while losing to Crookston 5-2 in Tuesday's triangular.

"It was a nice win against Wadena-Deer Creek," said DL head coach Kris Omberg.

Senior Joelle Langworthy kept up her stellar pace towards sub-section play at No. 1 singles, downing Macy Hartman 6-0 in both sets, while sophomore Katie Anderson won No. 2 singles over Paige Hartman 6-1, 6-3.

All the rest of the wins were by set sweeps, including Laurenn Johnson in third singles and Shantel Kluenenberg at No. 4 singles.

The duo of senior Tess Hamre and sophomore Brianna Seebold remain solid, winning by a pair of 6-1 wins, while India Fritz and Emily Seebold were victorious 6-4, 6-1.

Kira Leichter and Whitney Benscoter closed out doubles play at No. 3 with a pair of 6-1 triumphs.

Each of Anderson and Johnson had to move up a spot in singles play Tuesday, with the absence of Langworthy, which proved to be a successful bump up.

Both girls won their matches against Crookston, as Anderson won 6-0, 6-0 over Corine Solberg and Johnson took her match over Amy Frosaker 6-2, 6-1.

"That was big for both of the girls, because it raised their confidence and it will help for next year when Joelle isn't here (after graduating)," Omberg said. "It was good for those two to experience that."

With the sub-sections looming, the team looks to make some fine-tuning Thursday when they visit Perham.

"Joelle is looking to get out of the sub-section for a second straight year and our first doubles team of Tess and Brianna is a good combo," Omberg said. "They have good movement together and are looking more confident playing with each other."
