Laker boys' hockey team throttles Bagley/Fosston; fall short versus Little Falls

DETROIT LAKES - A quick start ignited the flames of a potential upset, as the Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team was able to pull out to a 2-0 advantage over the section favorites Little Falls Saturday inside Kent Freeman Arena.

But the Little Falls squad turned the tables in the final period, scoring three goals to pull out the 5-3 victory.

"We had a nice night and it was one of the better games we've played this season," said DL head coach Chris Denardo. "We played the majority of the game in their end and now, we know what we need to do when playoff time comes around."

Junior forward Alex Mason notched a power play goal in the first period, while senior forward Nate Baker compiled on more big numbers with a goal 18 second into the second period.

But the Flyers made their rally, scoring two straight by Alex Nelson and Joey Hanowski on a power play, as the fight section seeding was on.

The Lakers entered the third period with a 3-2 lead after Baker scored his second goal of the game, with assists going to Mason and Andy Schupp.

Although the Lakers limited the Flyers to just nine shots on net in the final period, compared to DL's five, three found their mark, including a game-tying power play goal by Luke Majerle. 5:09 into the third.

There was a little controversy with Little Falls' fourth and ultimately winning goal, when the apparent shot didn't look like it went in.

"We thought it was a bad call in the third period and we felt it was a no-goal," Denardo said.

That led into the insurance goal by Mitch Gregory midway through the third to cap the scoring.

Senior Blake Murphy had 28 saves, while Little Falls' Michael Stumpf had 21 for the win.

"Blake played well, he had a pretty good night in net," the DL coach included.

The Lakers (12-9-1) also lambasted visiting Bagley Tuesday evening at home, winning handily 10-0.

Ethan Brekke started the scoring early with an assist by Ryan Lindquist, while Baker notched his fifth short-handed goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

From there, the Lakers kept pounding the net, as Lindquist finished with his first career hat trick, Rusness had one tally, Kyle Hermann added one and Connor Collins notched his first varsity goal, as well.

Murphy saved all of 12 shots at him, as the Lakers had 43 shots on net for the evening.

The Lakers are currently sitting as either a five or six seed in the upcoming Section 6-1A playoffs and will host Morris/Benson in a section tilt Saturday.

The game was originally planned to be held at People's Park outside, but the rink wasn't ready to be used, so it will be back inside Kent Freeman Arena, starting at 3 p.m.
