Frazee girls' basketball runs into tough part of schedule

The Frazee Lady Hornets had a tough week as they faced Heart O'Lakes Conference stalwarts Hawley and Pelican Rapids, losing to both.

The Lady Hornets had a tough time finding the hoop Tuesday, Dec. 6, as the defending Heart O'Lakes Conference champion Hawley Nuggets put the clamps down on Frazee in a 48-14 victory.

On Friday, Frazee again fell to Pelican Rapids 66-46.

Against the Nuggets, Hawley's stifling man-to-man defense completely took Frazee out of their game, while the Nuggets had success shooting the ball. Hawley led 28-5 at halftime and did not let up in the second half.

"Things just kind of snowballed on us," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "They took away a lot of things that we like to do, and when we did get open shots, we couldn't knock them down. I give a lot of credit to Hawley for making things tough on us."

Alexis Tappe led Frazee with six points and three rebounds. Drew Sannes paced the Nuggets with 12 points.

Against the Vikings on Friday, the Lady Hornets played a much better game, but shooting woes kept Frazee from sticking with a high-powered Pelican Rapids team.

The Lady Hornets were within three points at 25-22 late in the half, only to see the Vikings end the half with an 8-1 run.

In the second half, Frazee crept within six points at 40-34, only to see Pelican Rapids rattle off eight straight points, and the Lady Hornets were never able to recover.

"We had a much better effort against Pelican Rapids on Friday," Conzemius said. "We just need to shoot the ball better and we will be OK. We are in a tough stretch of our schedule right now and we learning a lot about our team and the areas that we need to improve on. We will continue to get better as the season progresses."

Tappe led the Lady Hornets against the Vikings with 14 points, four assists and two steals. McKinzie Tangen added 10 points and Taylor Tappe had a team-high seven rebounds.

Frazee is back in action on Friday night when they host another tough Section team in Crosby-Ironton.
