Lakers keep hitting low

Most teams would love to have a "hump" to get over like the one the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team has had the last few meets.

Since they set the DLHS team scoring record of 318 over a week ago, the Lakers have been stuck on the same score, including this past weekend in Bemidji and Grand Rapids.

The Lakers shot a 318 Friday to set a new meet record and win the Bemidji Invite, while stroking a 319 Saturday to take the Grand Rapids tournament.

So, in essence, being "stuck" on 318 isn't so bad.

"The girls are driving the ball so well, that they are just drooling on the Par 5 holes, because they can shoot for birdies," said DL head coach Cali Harrier. "They are staying out of trouble, too."

The Lakers won by 12 strokes over Grand Rapids Saturday, as eighth grader Kate Smith shot a six-over par 78, while sophomore teammate Natalie Roth tied her with a 78 and Trisa Hutchinson earned a 79 for the top-three sweep.

Sophomore Matty Tschider rounded out DL's team score with an 84, while Sydney Busker shot an 89 and senior Courtney Hedstrom finished with an 86 to complete an all-under-90 Laker card.

With the Bemidji meet turning 25 years old, the Lakers stomped the previous record of 338, with another DLHS record-tying 318.

"I was very happy to see all of our scores under 85," Harrier said.

Hutchinson saw her first low player of the team meet with her four-over 76. She was followed by Roth's 78, Smith's 80 and Tschider's 83.

Busker had an 84 and Hedstrom an 85.

Pequot Lakes was in second place with a 348.

Three Laker girls having scoring averages in the top 10 in Class 2A. They include Smith with a 78.70 in third, Hutchinson in fourth with a 79.40 and Roth, fifth with a 79.5.

Becker senior Kourtney Williams has the lowest average with a 74.60.

The Lakers will be in Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday for a 3 p.m. start.
