LPA Volleyball - Raiders get back on track

It was a win which could propel the Lake Park-Audubon volleyball team into the next gear.

The Raiders (3-2) survived a marathon of a match, but fortunately came out on top over Fertile-Beltrami 3-2.

LP-A showed strong poise and determination, despite falling down in the match 2-1, then winning the fourth and fifth games for the victory.

Ironically, it was the third-game loss of 28-26, which could have turned the tables on the Falcons (2-3).

LP-A took game four 25-21 and the decisive game five 15-11. They won the opening set 25-22 and lost the next two 25-22 and 28-26.

"We were down 22-16 in the third game and ended up losing 28-26," said LP-A head coach Mike Summers. "That momentum we created with that comeback carried into the fourth and fifth games, despite losing that third one."

The Raiders finally put on display Summers has been waiting for all season.

"Everything finally clicked," the LP-A coach said. "We controlled our side of the net and were serving more aggressive and hitting our spots."

Blocking was also key, as junior middle hitter Becca Schermer had four solo blocks. Senior middle Carissa Raaen had three and senior right Emma Ulmer added two.

"The numbers don't show how well we played at the net," Summers said. "Our girls were controlling the net and forcing them to tip and roll, just like we wanted to."

Junior Bailee Bartunek led the team with 14 kills, while Schermer and Raaen had 11.

Junior setter Rilee Burnside had 31 assists, while sophomore labero Cheyanne Nelson contributed 31 digs and Bartunek had 27 digs.

Now Summers hopes the win will give a good shove to the team in the right direction.

"We need to move forward and prepare for the next one and use this momentum swinger," Summers said.

The Raiders will be at Norman County East (3-2) Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
