Mahnomen holds F-B to zero yards rushing

There haven't been many mistakes made by the Mahnomen offensive unit, but when there is that rare miscue, the defense has been there to pick up the slack.

Such was the case in the Class 1A No. 1 Indians' 37-0 victory over Fertile-Beltrami Friday and it started with a fumble on the first snap of the game, which was recovered by the Falcons.

But No. 10 ranked Fertile-Beltrami's offense couldn't take advantage of the mistakes -- in the form of four fumbles -- as they were held to an amazing zero yards of rushing.

"We got off to an ominous start by fumbling on our first play from scrimmage, but fortunately, our defense rose to the occasion and got the ball right back for us," said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. "That was kind of the story of the night, we would move the ball and score or fumble it away and our defense would get it right back for us."

The Indians' first two scores came on touchdown runs by Trevor Haugo and Bob Bjorge, while senior quarterback Jacob Pavek notched the next two scores on touchdown passes of 17 and 10 yards to Jason Schoenborn and Nathan Hanson, respectively.

"Offensively, we worked with a short field all night, again thanks to our defense and special teams," Clark said. "It's nice to see several different kids stepping up and making plays offensively. Bryce Penner, Trevor Haugo, Garret Hoffner, Jason Schoenborn and Nathan Hanson all made big plays at times during the game. That bodes well for us, as teams tend to focus on our quarterback and fullback."

But once again, the story of the game was the mighty Mahnomen defense, which held the Falcons to zero -- yes, zero -- yards of rushing.

"We didn't give them anything on the ground. It's pretty impressive when you hold a team to zero yards rushing," Clark said. "They did hit a few nice pass plays on us but I thought we were in good position on most of our coverages all night."

The Indians have locked up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Section 8-1A playoffs. They hosted Red Lake County Wednesday evening in the regular season finale.

Leading up to their final game, the Indians have managed to outscore their opponents by a hefty 335-12 margin.

They have registered 26 scoreless quarters for their opposition this season, as well, which is not good news for the Mahnomen's Section 8-1A opponents come playoff time.
