Local golfers earn awards

A trio of Detroit Lakes golfers have been honored for their achievements in the sport.

Detroit Lakes High School head boys' golf coach Bob Gorden was recently named as Coach of the Year by his peers in the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, as well as being honored as championship coach for leading his team to its second straight Class 2A state championship this past spring.

PGA golf professional Kris Smith, of Ironman Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, is the winner of the 2012 Minnesota PGA Junior Golf Leader Award.

The Junior Golf Leader Award is presented annually to the individual who is a leader in junior golf and reflects the ideal of those who work with youth.

The Minnesota Section announced the award winners at the annual Fall Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Monday, Oct. 22 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Karter Smith of Ironman Golf Course, who is also a senior at Detroit Lakes High School, will be honored as the MGA Junior Boys Player of the Year for 2012.

Smith will recieve his award at the MGA Annual Meeting Monday, Nov. 5 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club.

He is recieving this award for his outstanding play throughout the 2012 Tournament Season.

Karter Smith finished the Class AA Minnesota State High School League Championship tied for 2nd place, then tied for 3rd place at the Minnesota State Junior Boys Championship, and finished alone in third at the Minnesota PGA Junior Players Tournament of Champions. This is Smith's first Player of the Year title.
