An aggressive man-to-man trap defense, employed by the visiting Thief River Falls girls' basketball team, stifled Detroit Lakes in a 45-27 defeat of the Lakers Thursday evening inside Ralph Anderson Gym.

The Prowlers (2-0) were able to limit DL's shots, while building an 11-point lead midway through the second half to pull the Lakers out of their normal game strategy.

DL trailed only 19-14 at halftime.

"We did give ourselves opportunities to score and I thought we handled their 1-3-1 defense well, but we just didn't put the ball in the basket," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

The Prowlers expanded on a 30-23 advantage by scoring on back-to-back possessions, which applied more pressure on the Lakers' scoring attack.

"It changes your philosophy a bit when you are playing catch up like that," Hoganson said. "It forced us to put up our shots a little quicker."

The Lakers (0-2) also applied tough defense on a team which averaged over 60 points a game last year during their 20-win season.

Junior guard Brooke Yaggie was limited to seven points, which was impressive for DL, since she is already a 1,000-point scorer.

"I was really happy with our defensive effort, the girls matched up well against them," Hoganson said.

The Lakers were led by sophomore post Shay Nielsen with nine points and senior forward Megan Lindquist with eight.

The Prowlers were led by freshman post Meleah Biermaier with 10 points and senior center Crystal Amundson with nine.

The Lakers are trying to transition from their usual up-tempo game to more of a power one, which is shown by their inside play.

"So far, we are not getting the shots we need inside or making them, either," Hoganson said. "It's just not clicking yet."

The Lakers played Alexandria (1-0) Friday and will travel to Pequot Lakes (1-0) Tuesday for a Mid-State Conference game, starting at 7:30 p.m.
