There were some new and young faces competing for the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team in the season opener Saturday, but it came with the usual sharp Laker results.

Eighth grader Molly Lyngaas and seventh grader Natalie Nelmark each finished in the top five all-around, as the Lakers fell just .65 of a point behind Perham for first place as a team at 137-136.35.

"Our 136 was a good score for the first meet and the girls also now know what it's going to take to catch Perham," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo.

Lyngaas finished second overall in all-around with 35.5 points, while Nelmark was fourth at 35.15. Bismarck Century's Jessica Gabriel took top all-around honors with a 35.75 in the eight-team meet.

The Laker duo placed in the top 10 in all four events, as Lyngaas won bars with a 9.35 score and was third on floor at 9.15.

Leah Chavez also broke into the top 10 with a seventh-place tie on floor, earning a score of 8.95.

"Molly is a very good gymnast and Natalie did a lot of nice things in all of her events," Zamzo said. "Gymnasts such as Johanna Jernberg, Leach Chavez and Katie Crawford also helped out."

All but two DL gymnasts took part in their first varsity meet, so adjusting to the varsity level was one of the hurdles.

"All these girls have competed in big club meets, but the team component isn't as prevalent," Zamzo said. "We are very deep and will be trying to get the five best out there each meet."

Perham took advantage on beam, where they landed four in the top 10, which helped tip the scales in their favor.

The Laker junior varsity team did win the meet with a score of 123.5, with Alexis Ostlie taking top all-around honors with a 32.4 and Emma Disse second at 32.25.

"Both are varsity-level gymnasts and that's a luxury we'll have this year," Zamzo said.

The Lakers will be at St. Cloud Apollo Saturday, starting at noon.
