A second-half scoring barrage lifted the visiting Class 2A No. 6 ranked Staples-Motley to a 66-45 victory over Detroit Lakes Thursday.

The experienced and talented Cardinals (3-2) used a pressure and trapping defense to outscore the Lakers (1-4) by a 37-20 margin in the second half after DL trailed by four at halftime 29-25.

"We handled their defense well in the first half, with Trisa Hutchinson (14 points) really excelling and always being in the right position," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "But Staples-Motley wore us down and gradually pulled away."

The Lakers' ability to set up their offense took a serious blow midway through the second half, when sophomore point guard Kyley Foster was called for her fourth foul.

"That took a key ball handler off the floor," Hoganson said.

Hutchinson had an all-around good game, with nine rebounds and four assists to go along with her 14 points.

The Cardinals were led by Jasmine McGillvray with 21 points, as Staples-Motley sunk 12 three pointers in the win.

The Lakers will play in Wadena-Deer Creek (2-2) Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.

"As a young team, I am seeing improvements as a team," Hoganson said.
