Fast starts by opposing teams dropped the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team to 1-6 on the season, with road losses to both Moorhead and Wadena-Deer Creek.

An 18-8 deficit Tuesday against the W-DC Wolverines led to a 46-37 loss, as the duo of Hope Theisen and Caitlin Volkmann paced the home squad with 12 and 17 points, respectively.

"They were really hitting the offensive boards hard and moved the ball well versus our match-up zone and ended up freeing up Volkman and Theisen for three-point buckets," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

The Lakers closed the gap to two points by halftime, after a couple of Wolverine posts fell into foul trouble.

That enable sophomore forward Shay Nielsen to gain some space and lead the Lakers with 16 points.

"We went inside to Shay and closed the gap to two by halftime," Hoganson said.

"But we needed to take better advantage of their foul trouble."

Point guard Kyley Foster and two guard Karli Kerzman were able to penetrate the ball inside, but the shots didn't fall for the Lakers.

W-DC started the second half by going on a mini-five point run, where they held control of the game by six to eight points the rest of the way.

With just minutes to go, Volkmann and center Emily Miron made crucial baskets to seal the win for the Wolverines (3-2).

Saturday night in Moorhead, the Spuds reeled off to a 20-6 advantage, which was aided by DL turnovers and rushed shots.

"After halftime, we settled down and played better and guarded their shooters better," Hoganson said.

But Moorhead still prevailed 44-33 to lift their record to 2-3.

Nielsen notched her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"The girls seemed tired after playing six games in the first two weeks of the season," Hoganson added.

The Lakers will host Little Falls (0-6) Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
