The Detroit Lakes wrestling team had their first big invitational tournament this weekend and they passed it with positive results.

The Lakers finished in fourth place out of 16 teams after going 3-1 in the Grand Forks Seratoma Tournament Saturday.

With plenty of new wrestlers on the mat for the Lakers, seeing them in action against some strong competition was exactly what DL head coach Rob Ullyott wanted.

"I know we got better and no doubt, our balance is better," Ullyott said. "The middle of our lineup is our strength, but our upper weights had a good tournament."

The Lakers upended the No. 7 ranked North Dakota team in Valley City, 49-24, as DL won the first six of seven matches, with three being pins by Luke Payne (125 pounds), Nate Francis (132) and Jarret Nosal (152).

"Our goal is always to finish on the plus side of falls and the guys are getting more comfortable finishing off their opponents when they get them on their back," Ullyott said.

Bismarck, N.D., knocked DL out of the championship bracket with a 45-30 victory, which was keyed by five straight victories to end the match.

The Lakers proceeded to dominate the consolation bracket with a 57-14 win over Turtle Mountain, N.D., and a 48-18 triumph over Minot, N.D.

Payne, Francis, Parker Jackson (145) and Nosal each went undefeated in the tournament.

The Lakers also downed Mid-State Conference foes Crosby-Ironton 35-30 and Staples-Motley 42-19 Tuesday evening inside Ralph Anderson Gym.
