The Detroit Lakes gymnastics team is already starting to set their mark after finishing fourth overall in the St. Cloud Apollo Invite Saturday.

The Lakers were the highest finisher among smaller schools, while eighth grader Molly Lyngaas pounced on the state gymnastics scene after winning the all-around with a combined score of 36.45.

Seventh grade teammate Natalie Nelmark also is setting a positive tone for her 2012-13 season by finishing eighth overall with a 34.6.

"Molly and Natalie continue to be our top two and hopefully the other girls will start to feed off each other now," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo.

But it was seventh grader Emma Disse's sticky beam that got the Lakers off on the right foot, as she finished with a solid 8.2.

Lyngaas is off to a searing start to the season and finished fourth on beam with a 9.3, while taking third on floor at 9.35, second on vault at 9.2 and fourth on bars with a 9.3.

Nelmark also captured a top five spot on vault in fifth at 9.1.

Even with the 137.55, the Lakers still have plenty of room for improvement.

"We fell a bunch on beam and that affected our score," Zamzo said. "We definitely can see better scores on beam. Our goal is to hit 140, so if we can hit that mark, everything should be right there."

The Lakers also finished .54 better than Perham, which shows the two teams will be neck-and-neck the entire season.

The Lakers will in Park Rapids Friday for a 6 p.m. start to the meet.
