Aggression was the only factor lacking for the Detroit Lakes wrestling team, as they finished 15th overall out of 35 teams in the Big Bear Tournament Friday and Saturday in Cass Lake.

The Lakers had three placewinners in the massive individual tournament, as sophomore Parker Jackson was the lone DL grappler to make it to the finals at 145 pounds.

Jackson lost to Pine River-Backus' Drey Loge, who was the Section 8-2A champion last year. Jackson wrestled close to Loge, with neither wrestler registering a point until the third period.

Loge pulled off a late reversal to win 2-0.

"Overall, the kids wrestled hard, but we wrestled too conservatively and were not aggressive enough," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "We lost a lot of two-point matches and were afraid to make mistakes."

Senior Zach Baker placed sixth with a 3-1 record, before having to end his tourney with an injury default in the semifinal round at 138.

Freshman heavyweight James Huwe continued his improvement with an eight-place finish, after losing out to eventual champion Cass Herzog of Willmar in the first round.

Huwe worked his way through the wrestlebacks, finishing with a 4-3 record.

"James is just doing a great job as a freshman," Ullyott said. "He is facing juniors and seniors the majority of the time. James just needs to open things up more and I know he has the ability to do so."

Senior Jason Griego (195) and junior Brandon Dahring (160) each had winning records at 3-2, while those Lakers who went 2-2 included sophomore Tyler Bellefeuille (106), junior Jarett Nosal (152) and senior Cameron Fritz (220).

"This tournament brought to light things we need to work on over the break," Ullyott said. "One thing for certain, though, is we need to be more aggressive and that comes with more mat time and drilling.

"We have the talent here, we are just holding ourselves back."

The Lakers will gain some time to heal and rest up over the holiday break and will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 5, for the Perham Invite.
