DL Swimming and Diving - Lakers lose to TRF in eye-opener

It's good to have your eye-opener in just the second meet of a long season, as the Detroit Lakes boys' swimming and diving team found out.

A disappointing loss in Thief River Falls Friday was a good lesson to learn for the young Lakers, who were coming off a strong first meet in Fergus Falls.

But it wasn't as if the DL squad was at full strength in the meet, with over half the team falling ill at one time or another through the course of last week.

"We had someone different sick each day, so even on the bus ride up to Thief River Falls, I had to change the lineup around because we had guys missing," said DL head coach Rian Heimark. "But, even though we won almost every event, we didn't take those second, third or fourth-place finishes.

"It was a good eye opener for the boys."

The Lakers won seven of the 11 events, since the Prowler pool can't host diving events.

But the Prowlers gained the majority of their points from picking up middle-finishes, including first through third-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly.

"The guys learned they can't only just win events, we need those second and third swimmers to place high, as well," Heimark said.

Senior Carter Krengel picked up a pair of event wins, by taking both the 50 freestyle (23.01) and 100 freestyle (51.65).

Jared Olson also had two victories in the 200 freestyle (2:02.50) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.23).

The other individual winner included Mike Okeson in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.17).

The Lakers took the 200-medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay races as well.

"We didn't do what we were suppose to do in the 200 freestyle relay race and Thief River Falls took first and third, which was a six-point swing right there," Heimark said. "We did win the last three events to pull close, though."

The Lakers will host Moorhead Thursday inside the BTD Aquatics Center for their last meet of the 2012 portion of their schedule. They will resume Saturday, Jan. 5, with their home invite, starting at noon.

"We will need to get rested and healthy over the break," Heimark said. "But most of all, we need to get in better shape. So the break is coming at a good time."
