DL Gymnastics - DL's Nelmark has breakout meet

The depth of the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team is starting to shine, as seventh grader Natalie Nelmark finished as the Lakers' top all-around performer with a fourth-place finish during the Fargo Davies Invite Saturday.

Nelmark registered a 36.025, with DL's leading scorer this season, eighth grader Molly Lyngaas, in sixth at 35.325.

The Lakers finished second overall as a team, just behind Dickinson, N.D., 142.475 to 141.225.

But as DL head coach Steve Zamzo said, this young team has a plenty high ceiling with over half the season to go.

"We scored a 141 and in my opinion, we didn't have a very good meet," Zamzo said. "They are still not quite on their game, yet."

Seventh grader Skyler DeBoer made her varsity debut a good one, by keying the team's score on vault with an 8.825.

Lyngaas was third overall at 9.325 and Nelmark fourth with a 9.2.

"Skylar's vault was huge for us, because we were not having a very good day on it," Zamzo said.

Eighth grader Johanna Jernberg was DL's top finisher on floor in sixth with an 8.85, while Nelmark was fourth on beam at 9.125 and tied for third on bars with a 9.0.

The Lakers still had five falls on beam and four on floor, so Zamzo sees plenty of cleaning up to do.

"We don't have those falls, that's an extra two to three points," the DL coach said. "The potential is there and the girls are working hard in practice."

The meet also saw the return of seventh grader Alexis Ostlie, who has been out with an injury.

Overall, the 141.225 is the step in the right direction for 2013.

"This was definitely a team effort," Zamzo said.

The Lakers will be in action Saturday in the Moorhead Invite.
