DL Girls Hockey - Lakers use spread-out scoring to win 2nd in row

There's no better time than the present to start putting together a winning streak, as the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team is doing after their 4-2 home win against Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday.

For the second straight game, the Lakers had spread-out scoring, with three different players finding nylon, while outshooting the Wolverines by a 34-19 margin.

"Getting these last two wins has been huge for the girls' confidence," said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. "We beat two section opponents and it's also nice to see the spread-out scoring, because we don't have to rely on one player to do it all."

The Lakers (3-14) have now scored 15 goals in the last two games.

They needed a little spark after falling down 1-0 in the first period, following an Abigail Ecker goal, and special teams provided that in the second period.

Forward Sydney Haman put DL on the board 2:57 into the second on an unassisted short-handed effort.

That provided the motivation, as DL's Randa Larsen scored on a power play goal, assisted by Hailey Sonstegard and senior Callie Johnson.

Brooke Umland tied the game at 2-2, but Emily Seebold broke that up 4:05 later on the assist by Johnson.

Sonstegard added the insurance with 13:07 left in the third, as Johnson picked up her second assist in the game.

"Callie made a play on the boards in the second period which helped motivate the team," Norby said. "Her success may not measure up in goals or assists, but Callie did remind me of Brin Seebold (DL's all-time leading scorer) out there with the way she was hustling and playing aggressive."

The defense also played well, by limiting quality shots on goalies Badurek and Wenger.

"Our young defensive players are starting to step up and be more consistent," Norby included.

The Lakers will travel to Crookston (8-8) Tuesday, for a 5:30 p.m. start.
