DL Nordic Skiing - Mild winter hinders Laker skiers' season

It's been a difficult season for the Detroit Lakes Nordic skiing teams, not in terms of success on the trails, just due to the fact it's been a struggle to even get on them.

With a lack of snow and mild weather, the Lakers have lost several meets and have only competed in five, including last Tuesday's Spidahl's in Erhard for the Ottertail Nordic Invite.

"We started skiing in early December by shoveling snow off a few parking lots to make a small loop on the practice football field," said DL head skiing coach Dan Josephson. "We have had to cancel or postpone four races, including our home meet (at Maplelag Resort)."

The Lakers have shifted their practices to Mt. View, which has survived the meltdown from rain and warm temperatures.

Last Tuesday, the Lakers had five boys finish the Classic Invite at Spidahl's.

Ian Fritz led the way in sixth place, followed by Zach Foltz in eighth, Austin Askelson in 13th, Anthony Meyer in 21st and Montana Johnson in 22nd.

For the DL girls, Miranda Olson led the way in 12th and Jill Feuillerat in 16th.

The Lakers will be traveling to Brainerd Friday, where Little Falls will be hosting their home meet.

"We are a little young on the girls' side, but we have quite a few JV girls who will be getting more experience in the next couple of weeks," Josephson included.
