It was time for the depth to shine for the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team, as the regular varsity starters sat out the Moorhead Invite Saturday.

With the Laker junior varsity team averaging a 122-123 this season, they upped their score to a 126.9 Saturday to take third out of three teams in the Gold Division.

"The plan was to get our junior varsity gymnasts some varsity action and they did quite well," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. "It was some of our gymnasts first varsity meet."

For seventh grader Alexis Ostlie, the meet was a good one, after returning from a foot injury.

Ostlie finished fourth in the all-around category with a combined score of 34.8, while finishing fifth on vault with an 8.95 and bars at 8.3. She also was fourth on beam with an 8.75 and third on floor with an 8.8.

"She becoming more confident performing on her foot," Zamzo said of Ostlie.

Seventh grader Skylar DeBoer also had strong vault and floor events.

"We focused on their skills to be extremely tight and accurate," Zamzo added.

Moorhead won the meet with a 138.85, while Fargo Gold was second at 131.85.

The Lakers used their normal lineup Tuesday in their home meet against Moorhead, beating the Spuds 141.775 to 139.45.
