A sluggish first half was too much to overcome for the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team, as they were upended by visiting Bemidji 71-60 Tuesday.

A 38-20 halftime edge by the Lumberjacks keyed their first win of the season, after they started 0-11.

The Lakers shot 44 percent from the field, while committing 16 turnovers and shooting 6-13 from the free throw line.

But it was Bemidji's ability to run the floor which created easy points, as they were able to fend off a Laker rally in the second half by hitting well-timed three pointers by James Hendricks and Billy Baumgartner.

The Lakers' leading scorer, senior guard Derek Long played well, penetrating the lane and fighting for 21 points, while senior guard Kirk McLeod added 11.

DL was only able to slice its deficit to single digits a few times in the second half, but each and every time they did, Bemidji responded.

The Lakers (5-6) will host Mid-State Conference opponent Crosby-Ironton (8-6) Thursday, for a 7:30 p.m. start.
