DL girls' basketball goes inside for 'W'

An effective inside game and stingy defense in the second half resulted in a big Mid-State Conference win over visiting Pequot Lakes last Thursday by the score of 63-40.

The Lakers (7-9) found their inside game to their liking, as post players Shay Nielsen and Brooke Olson combined for 29 points, and DL's defense laid the hammer down in the second half by limiting the Patriots (11-7) to just 17 points.

"The girls shared the ball extremely well and pounded it inside to Nielsen and Olson," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

"Time and time again early on we were able to go inside."

The high-percentage shots resulted in an 18-5 advantage in the first half, but the Pats were able to trim it to 28-23 by halftime.

Nielsen, who scored eight points in the first half, equaled her four field goals in the second, but also went 3-6 from the free throw line.

The perimeter game opened up a bit in the second half, as well, as point guard Kyley Foster scored six of her 10 points in that time span and senior guard Karli Kerzman netted two of her three treys, as well, to finish with nine points.

"To the girls' credit, we started the second half like we started the game and really passed the ball well and kept getting the ball inside," Hoganson said.

"The girls won the game with tough rebounding and (assistant coach) Tim Swenson's defense really frustrated the talented Pequot Lakes players."

The Patriots were outscored 35-17 in the second half alone, as DL was led by Nielsen's 19 points, Foster's 10 and Olson's 10.

The win stretches the Lakers' streak to four, as they play in Thief River Falls against Class 3A's No. 9 ranked Prowlers (17-1) Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

DL's game against Wadena-Deer Creek was postponed for a later date Tuesday.
