Laker matmen just shy of a conference championship

The final tally of the Mid-State Conference meet was as tight as it could get, as the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus wrestling team survived Detroit Lakes by five points at 218-213.

The conference meet, which was held inside Ralph Anderson Gym Friday, had a half a dozen Lakers winning weight titles, while PL/PRB had five.

The Lakers especially did well in their middle and upper weights, where they won the final six of nine classes.

"In our conference, the upper weights have a lot of parity, with not a lot of standouts, but our guys wrestled very well there," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "It was a tremendous effort by our team and I think we could have easily have won it."

DL senior Zach Baker started the win streak at 138-pounds, with sophomore Parker Jackson narrowly losing in the title bout at 145 to No. 3 ranked Drey Loge of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, losing in overtime.

"That match could have gone either way, Parker was right there all the way to the end," Ullyott said.

The Lakers' experience shown through in the middle weights, with juniors Jarett Nosal winning 152 and Brandon Dahring 160.

In the upper weights, seniors Jason Griego won the 195 division and Cameron Fritz the 220 class.

Freshman heavyweight James Huwe came up big with a championship over PLPRB's Jared Adkins, who was raked No. 8 in the state.

"(Adkins) beat James earlier in the Big Bear Tournament, so it was good to see him win this time around," Ullyott said.

The end result just signifies the race for the Section 8-2A team title is as tight as ever.

Perham is the hands-on favorite, after they have beaten each of PLPRB, DL and Thief River Falls.

The Lakers will face both PLPRB and Thief River Falls in the upcoming week.

"It's going to be a real dogfight and it will come down to conditioning, technique and effort," Ullyott said of the four-team race in the section. "Our guys will need to focus in on what they are doing in the final two weeks here and put everything into improving."

The Lakers will host a triangular Thursday against TRF and Fosston, starting at 5 p.m.
