Lakers have strong showing in State True Team

The season is starting to peak for the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team, which scored a fourth-place finish at the State True Team meet in Jackson Saturday with a final score of 174.025.

In the True Team format, all five scores count from each gymnast in each event, compared to only four during a normal meet.

If the Lakers were counting just their normal four scores, they would have notched a season-high 141.725.

"This young team really came together during this meet," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. "We didn't have a perfect meet, yet, and still had six falls (which is roughly three points lost).

"So, being a young team, we still have a ways to go, but the journey is getting shorter."

With Tuesday's final home meet against Park Rapids cancelled (it maybe rescheduled, but was not as of press time), the Lakers have one more regular season meet left when they travel to Bemidji Saturday for an 11 a.m. start.

"This group of gymnasts are working hard to represent Section 8-1A in the State meet this year," Zamzo said.

The Lakers finished behind Austin (178.9), New Prague and Melrose (each with 177.675).

Something to note, DL was 2.4 points ahead of Perham, which finished seventh in the True Team, and will be the biggest obstacle for the Lakers to complete their goal of making state.

Individual scores were not reported, since the True Team meet is focused on team scores.

The Section 8-1A meet will be in Park Rapids, Saturday, Feb. 16.
