DL Boys Basketball - McLeod's three's pace DL over DGF

There was a rash of three-pointers made by the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team in their 68-54 rout of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Thursday.

The Lakers went a healthy 13-28 (46-percent) from beyond the three-point arc, with the main culprit being senior guard Kirk McLeod, who went 5-9 on his way to a game-high 24 points.

He started the game on fire, going 4-5 from three-point land, as the Lakers bolted out to a big lead and an eventual 34-23 halftime advantage.

"Kirk jump started us with his three's," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "He had the hot hand and his teammates passed up shots to get him the ball."

Even though the Lakers were outrebounded 28-24, they were able to pressure the Rebel offense into mistakes, while senior guard Derek Long had four of DL's seven steals.

The second half saw the Lakers stall out, as D-G-F (6-11) climbed back into it by carving the deficit down to seven points.

But guard Nick Groth halted any hometown rally by draining two three-pointers out of a Laker timeout to build the lead back to double digits.

Flint also credited sophomore guard Ryan Cihak for having a strong defensive presence, keeping DGF's leading scorer to zero points.

"I challenged Ryan before the game and he was up to the task," Flint said. "He played great defense the entire game and that translated into a better offensive game with 12 points."

Groth also hit for double digits with 11 points, while DL leading scorer Long was held to six points, but led the team with eight rebounds.

The Lakers are over .500 for the first time this season with a 10-9 record, and will host Thief River Falls (13-5) Tuesday for a big Section 8-3A game.

DL defeated the Prowlers earlier in the season by the score of 65-61 Dec. 13, and a win could potentially pull the Lakers a No. 3 seed for the playoffs.

"Getting a higher seed will obviously make the road a little easier in the playoffs," Flint added.
