DL Boys Hockey: Flyers score 5 in 3rd to key win

A 2-2 tie quickly became into an unraveling by the Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team, as the visiting Little Falls Flyers had a five-goal surge in the third period to key a 7-4 victory in the regular season finale Thursday inside Kent Freeman Arena.

That leads into the Section 8-1A playoffs, where the Lakers landed the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 Red Lake Falls (3-22) in the first round Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m.

The winner advances to face No. 2 Thief River Falls (15-9, ranked No. 8 in Class 1A) Thursday at 7 p.m.

East Grand Forks earned the top seed, followed by TRF, Warroad, Crookston and Park Rapids. No. 9 Bagley will visit No. 8 Lake of the Woods in the other round one game.

The Lakers (10-14-1) were holding tough against the talented and No. 12 Class 1A state-ranked Flyers (19-6) by leading 3-2 after two periods, before Little Falls' third period scoring barrage.

It didn't stop Laker forward Connor Collins from recording his first hat trick of his career, as he scored two power play goals, while senior forward Austin Rusness notched the other DL tally.

DL led through the first period on two of Collins' goals, the first being a nice scoring play assisted by Ryan Deconcini and Rusness just 14 seconds into the game.

Collins put the Lakers up 2-1 on a power play goal 16:29 into the first, with the same DL players on the assists.

The two teams exchanged goals in the second, the Lakers on an unassisted effort by Rusness and Little Falls' by August Maciej.

But the Flyers found the back of the net five times against DL sophomore goalie MacKenzie Steele, as the Lakers were playing one man short for the majority of the frame.

The Flyers cashed in on three power plays in the period, while the final goal being an empty netter by Luke Majerle.

DL had five penalties called on them, leading to the three power play goals, as Little Falls outshot the Lakers by a 15-7 margin in the third.

Steele had 30 saves, while Flyer goalie Michael Stumpf had 28.

Each of Mark Anez and Ben Newman had two goals for Little Falls, while Matthew Stumpf scored the other one.
