DL Wrestling: Lakers take 2nd in section

Peaking at the perfect time, the Detroit Lakes wrestling team came up short of earning a state berth in the Class 2A meet after falling to Perham 36-26 in the Section 8-2A championship in Thief River Falls Saturday.

The Lakers were coming off of two impressive and close wins over Fergus Falls 34-31 in the quarterfinals and Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in the semifinals by the score of 33-22.

The No. 3 seeded DL squad wrestled the top-seeded Yellowjackets even in the title match, but Perham keyed its victory by winning from 160-pounds to 220.

"I was very pleased with the kids' effort, I thought they wrestled outstanding all day," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "I didn't think bonus points came into play, it just came down to the close matches, in which we came up short in a few of them."

The Lakers led 20-15 after Parker Jackson recorded a 23-8 technical fall on Jacob Monson at 145 pounds and Jarett Nosal picked up a big 4-3 decision over Collin Nietzke at 152.

But after that, the Yellowjackets went on a five-match winning streak, which included two pins and three decisions.

"We knew we had a battle on our hands against Perham and it pretty much went the way we had it down on paper beforehand," Ullyott said. "It was close all the way through."

The Lakers avoided early elimination in the quarterfinals, thanks in due to freshman heavyweight James Huwe, who stuck Otter Taylor Tenner in 3:17 to secure the 34-31 victory.

Trailing 31-28 heading into the heavyweight bout, Huwe needed to gain some bonus points, since neither team knew how the tie-breaker was going to fall.

The match was scoreless after the first period and Huwe took the up position in the second period and eventually was able to turn Tenner for the pin.

"James was certainly favored in the match, but it's always hard to gain bonus points, especially in the heavyweight class," Ullyott said.

The Lakers faced Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in the semifinals, the same team which defeated the Lakers just a week ago for the Mid-State Conference championship and the No. 2 seed in the section.

But things went differently Saturday, as Luke Payne scored a big win at 120 with a 7-5 decision over Nate Adkins, while 182-pounder Jeff Gailfus recorded a takedown with one second left for a 5-4 upset win over Justin Mackenthun.

"We got the wins where we needed them and I thought it was our best dual of the season," Ullyott said.

The Section 8-2A individual meet will be in Fergus Falls Friday and Saturday.
