The Class 1A state gymnastics meet Saturday was just the tip of the iceberg of what the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team has in store for the next several years.

Three Lakers competed in the individual state meet Saturday inside the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion and for all of them, it was the first taste of something which will potentially become a regular occurrence in the next two to four years.

Eighth grader Molly Lyngaas finished in the top 10 in all-around by finishing sixth with a combined score of 36.8125, while sophomore Allison Berg was 29th on vault with an 8.8625 and eighth grader Johanna Jernberg placed 22nd on floor with an 8.9875.

"It was a great experience for all of them," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. "I thought they all performed very well and they had the opportunity to see what it takes to climb up to that top five level."

Lyngaas qualified for three events in state, missing out on floor, but still performing it because of her all-around status.

She took seventh on vault with a 9.4375, 10th on bars at 9.1125, 14th on beam with a 9.15 and a 9.1125 on floor.

"Molly had a great vault to start the meet with and she was having a fantastic bars routine, before her foot hit one of the bars on her dismount," Zamzo said. "She lost some points there and also injured her toe for her last two events."

Jernberg also had to struggle through a back injury for her floor routine, but she persevered and nearly scored a 9.0.

"I just told her for the next one minute and 30 seconds, do your best and she competed well under the circumstances," Zamzo said.

Berg wasn't fully satisfied with her performance on vault, after she stuck her second try, but ended up stumbling a couple steps left after her landing.

"That lost her some points, but it's good to see she wants to do better, because these girls are very competitive," the DL coach stated.

Winning all-around was Austin junior Sela Fadness with a 38.5, with Alexandria sophomore Hannah Wendel winning vault (9.7875), Fadness the bars (9.6125) and floor (9.6625) and Alexandria senior Briquelle Bowden taking first on the beam (9.6125).
