Girls basketball playoffs: DL falls to TRF 38-26 in Section 8-3A

Playing against each other for the third time of the season, there were no surprises to be had in the Section 8-3A first round of the playoffs between No. 3 Detroit Lakes and No. 2 Thief River Falls.

What resulted was a defensive struggle, as each team failed to reach 40 points, but in the end it came down to a 38-26 victory for the home-team Prowlers.

"The game was a defensive battle," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

"Both teams knew what each wanted to do and both teams took away their sets that they have had success with."

Nine minutes into the game, the scoreboard was stuck in a quagmire with a 4-4 tie, before DL senior guard Karli Kerzman drained a pair of three-pointers to eventually put the Lakers up 13-8.

The Prowlers outscored the Lakers 10-3 heading into halftime to hold an 18-15 advantage.

Offensive rebounds keyed the Prowlers' 10-point margin midway through the second half.

"TRF's defensive pressure took us out of any offensive flow during the second half," Hoganson said.

"They were just too athletic for us at every position. We need to use this as motivation for the off-season."

The season ends with a 10-15 mark for the Lakers, as they will graduate four seniors.

"It is always hard to say goodbye to our seniors," Hoganson said.

"That said, we return a lot of potentially top-level basketball players and if they go to work, we could be very successful in the next few years."

Junior post Trisa Hutchinson was the lone Laker to reach double digits with 12 points, while Brooke Yaggie led TRF with 11 points.
