Detroit Lakes will be getting a heavy dose of archery over the next four months.

Heart of Lakes Bowhunters (HOLB) organization president, Kyle Aho, recently announced that the Minnesota State Archery Association (MSAA) has awarded three state archery tournaments to the local club based in Detroit Lakes.

The three tournaments are the Federation of International Target Archery (FITA) state shoot on June 1, the State Outdoor Target shoot June 22 and 23, and the State Indoor Target on April 5-6, 2014, which draws over a thousand archers.

This schedule of tournaments will bring hundreds of archers and their families to the Detroit Lakes area.

The local archery club sponsors winter league shooting at the Boys and Girls Club in town, outdoor animal target (3D) and field archery tournaments at their outdoor facility located east of Detroit Lakes.

Club members also provide archery instruction and shooting opportunities for 4-H clubs, school physical education classes and community education classes.

HOLB club members annually qualify for the state indoor target shoot which will be held this spring on April 6-7, in Owatonna.

Organizers there are expecting over 1,000  archers ranging from six to 80 years old.

Seventeen local archers qualified in a regional shoot held in February and they will participate in different classifications that include bowhunter and free style.
