Frazee boys golf preview

Times have changed the Frazee boys’ golf team, with new faces abounding for the 2013 season.

For the first time in five years, the Hornets will be without former state champion Beau Hanson and three-time state qualifier Zack Ziegler.

Also gone is longtime head coach John Olson, who retired from teaching and coaching this past year.

But there is still plenty to build on for the Hornets, who return five sophomores with varsity experience, along with new head coach Jason Reierson.

“We’ll be based off our younger guys, but there are quite a few of them who are really into golf,” Reierson said.

The Hornets will have their five sophomores leading the way, with Austin Torma, Calvin Streeper, Isaac Schermerhorn and Matt Tangen having the most experience.

Other sophomores out are Matt Daggett and Brady Mickelson, while two juniors will compete for the first time in Drew Dahlgren and John Geis.

The big key Reierson wants to see is consistency.

“I would like to have the kids consistently shooting in the 80 to 90 range,” Reierson said.

“We just need to get out on the course now and see what we have.”

Which, as all Minnesota spring sports teams are finding out, is an impossible notion with the extended winter.

The Hornets have been traveling to the Sports Bubble in Fargo, but nothing is like playing on a real course.

The April 18 meet in Pelican Rapids is obviously in danger of being postponed, while the potential season-opener could happen April 22 in Hawley.

The Frazee Invite will be May 6.
