No. 1 Lakers claim M-S and Red Wing

Even playing on the most difficult course any of the members of the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team has ever played on, couldn’t stop them from taking another dominating win Tuesday in Red Wing.

The Class 2A’s No. 1 ranked Lakers scored a 311 on the difficult Red Wing Country Club course, which is considered one of the most challenging in the state.

According to the Minnesota Golf Association website, “it’s a tight course with several holes that have no bail-out — hazard right, out of bounds left, or thick forests on both sides — and it probably features more dramatic elevation changes than any other course in the state. The 251-yard, par-4 ninth hole, as an example, rises about 80 feet from tee to green.

“Hidden behind some of the hills are hazards. On some other holes, a well-hit drive down the middle of the fairway can run out of room and wind up in the shrubbery, in a hazard, or out of bounds.

“This isn’t the kind of course you would want to play in competition without a practice round.”

But the well-rounded and talented Lakers conquered it anyway, as the closest team was host Red Wing with a 333, 22 strokes behind DL.

“All the girls said this was the toughest course they have ever played on,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “The coaches there thought it would be impressive for any team to score under 320.”

Junior Natalie Roth finished fourth overall with a four-over 76, while New Prague’s Kensie Niesen was medalist with a one-under par 71.

But the Lakers had four in the top 10, with junior Trisa Hutchinson and freshman Kate Smith each with a 78.

Junior Matty Tschider scored a 79 for eighth place.

The Red Wing Tournament attracts the top teams in the state and Tuesday had the full slate of top Class 3A and 2A teams.

“It’s a fun meet and very competitive,” Harrier said. “It’s the third time we’ve played in it, but the first time winning it. That was one of the goals the girls set at the start of the season.”

Sydney Busker also scored well with an 81 and Emma Thompson rounded out DL’s card with a 91.

The Lakers were coming off another Mid-State Conference championship Monday in Staples-Motley, after shooting a 306, with Pequot Lakes a distant second at 347.

Smith took medalist honors with an even-par 72, and was followed by All-Conference teammates Hutchinson (76), Roth (78), Thompson (80) and Busker (85).

An Honorable Mention went to Tschider, who scored an 85 as well.

“The girls are crossing off their goals already this season, which includes shooting a 304 in Jordan (the site of the state meet), the new school record,” Harrier said.

The Lakers will be in St. Cloud Thursday and at Wildflower Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
