The arrow is pointing in the “right direction” for the two-time defending state Class 2A champion Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team, as they start seeing the end of the regular schedule.

A busy schedule due to a very late start to the season has given the Lakers plenty of opportunity to get back into the swing of things, as they claimed one of their annual goals by winning the Mid-State Conference meet Monday in Staples.

The victory was DL’s 20th straight conference championship, but it didn’t come easy, as the host Cardinals finished just six strokes behind at 314 to 308.

“I was worried about Staples-Motley because they are tough on their home course, but the guys were able to pull it out,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “To win 20 straight years is very impressive no matter what conference you are in. It shows the quality of our program.”

Senior Karter Smith was the conference medalist winner by shooting a two-over par 74, with junior Michael Herzog right behind him at 75.

Other All-Conference Honorable Mentioned Lakers included sophomores Christian Hedstrom and Ben Mallow, each with an 80.

Senior Austin Rusness finished with a very respectable 82.

The Lakers also hosted the Northwest Classic Friday and Saturday, but due to the Detroit Country Club not being open yet, the tournament was held at Perham’s Lakeside Country Club Friday and Wildflower Golf Course Saturday.

The Lakers shot a 319 at Perham, where three of DL’s golfers never played before, but recovered well Saturday with a 318 and a final 637 for third overall.

Wayzata won with a 623 and Moorhead was second at 632.

“We dug ourselves a hole Friday, but played better Saturday at Wildflower,” Gorden said. “Michael (Herzog) and Austin (Rusness) really played well Saturday.”

Herzog finished with a seven-over par 151, while Rusness carded a 158.

Other DL two-day scores included Smith’s 161, Tanner Schnathorst’s 163, Mallow’s 170 and Sam Goral’s 175.

The DL second team fired a 683, led by Austin Dodd and Luke Payne, who each with a 175.

The Lakers will be at Longbow Golf Course in Walker Friday and Saturday, which is the Section 8-2A course.
