The goal of ending the Class 2A State True Team on the podium was realized, as the Detroit Lakes boys’ track and field team finished sixth Saturday in Stillwater.

The Lakers notched a score of 306.5, as Totino-Grace won top honors with a mark of 424.

“We relied on our depth again,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “We had to pull up some alternates for our relays and they filled in very well.”

Out of the nine teams competing in the state meet, only Detroit Lakes and Sartell had both the boys’ and girls’ teams there.

It made for a busy day, but the Lakers held their own, even winning the 4x400 with a time of 3:30.57.

“Our 4x400 team’s time is also now one of the best for the upcoming Section 8-2A meet, as well,” Zamzo said.

The Lakers had five top four finishes in the open events, with Sam Champa taking fourth in the triple jump with a 40-02 and Josh Weber fourth in the discus at 138-07.

Ross Kalberer was fifth in the high jump with a 5-10 and Montana Johnson took fourth in the 400 dash with a time of 52.62.

“Montana had a great meet and he looked like he belonged there,” Zamzo said. “Sam Champa also had personal best marks in the long and triple jump events.”

Next up for the Lakers will be the Section 8-2A preliminaries, which will be held at DLHS’ Mollberg Field, Wednesday, May 29, starting at 3 p.m.
