DL boys’ golf ready to defend title

Business was taken care of by the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team Wednesday, as they took the Sub-Section 8-2A South meet at the Park Rapids Headwaters Golf Course after shooting a 306.

The meet was a close call, though, as Fergus Falls was just three strokes off the two-time Class 2A state champions.

“We always knew there are two to three teams which could play close if we didn’t play our best,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “But like I’ve always said, we need to be concerned about our game, not our opponents’ game.”

The Lakers also had another different lowman, as sophomore Tanner Schnathorst – a member of last year’s state championship team –  shot a meet low three-over par 75 for medalist honors.

Junior Michael Herzog was second with a 76.

“It just shows we have six quality golfers on the team, because Tanner was playing as our No. 6 golfer in the Sub-Sections and he wins medalist,” Gorden said. “We know we didn’t play our best overall, but it was enough to move on to Sections.”

Senior Karter Smith, who is playing as DL’s No. 1 golfer, shot a 77, while sophomore Ben Mallow recorded a 78 and senior Austin Rusness and sophomore Christian Hedstrom rounded out the Lakers’ card with an 83 each.

Hawley also advanced out of the Sub-Sections with a third-place score of 328.

The Section meet will be played Monday at the Headwaters Golf Course in Walker, starting at 10 a.m.

It’s a course the Lakers are very familiar with and one they have had great success on, after winning the last two section meets there.

“All of our golfers are capable of doing good things and all have shot par or under par sometime this season already,” Gorden said. “It will just come down to each golfer playing their best on that certain day.”
