Angels win over Pirates in 11th

The Detroit Lakes Angels escaped Wednesday evening with an 8-7 11-inning victory over visiting Perham, after a wild ending catapulted them back to .500 at 5-5.

After losing a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth inning, the Angels were able to put runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the 11th, still tied 7-7.

First-year Angels player and recent DLHS graduate, catcher Kirk McLeod, was able to make contact down the first base line.

The Pirate first baseman was able to make the play on the ball, but Angels’ Joe Hofland already had a good break from third base. The throw was just a millisecond too late, as Hofland slid home safely to secure the 8-7 victory.

The win lifted the Angels back to 5-5, as their lineup is starting to look like what DL co-manager Phil Kirchner envisioned it.

“We are starting to get all our players back, like pitcher Brock Johnson and Mark Gulseth,” Kirchner said. “With the additions of Derek Zitzow and Kirk McLeod, we should be playing better the rest of the season.”

Six errors did hinder the Angels behind their ace Johnson, who was pitching in his first game back from his season at the University of North Dakota.

Johnson was solid, giving up four hits in eight innings of action.

Reliever Reed Oistad lost the save in the top of the ninth, but gained the victory with a good game on the mound.

“Reed pitched well, we just made too many errors on defense,” Kirchner added.

Zitzow was 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Taylor Fuhs was 3-5 with an RBI.

Connor McLeod added three hits, as DL finished with a total of 14 hits, to Perham’s nine.

DL hosted their tournament over the weekend, with the championship game Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Washington Ballpark.

They will be back in action Friday evening when they host Bluffton, for a 7:30 p.m. start.
