DL 14/15U wins out to cap regular season play
The Detroit Lakes 14/15U baseball team finished an undefeated week to head into the postseason on a roll.
“The team is peaking at the right time going into tournament time,” head coach Steve Tucker said.
DL defeated Pelican Rapids 15-9 Monday, July 9 overcoming numerous errors defensively to break a 9-9 tie going into the seventh inning where the offense came alive for six runs to secure the victory.
The Lakers were led offensively by Blaine Henderson picking up three hits and scoring three runs while Jaden Thorson, Rich Person, and Noah Hagen all collected two hits. Thorson and John Bergum each knocked in three runs.
DL faced Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on the road Wednesday, July 11 coming away with an 11-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Henderson and Logan Lund combined to pitch a no-hitter.
Henderson gave up only two walks and allowed no hits over six innings before giving way to Lund who kept the no-hitter intact shutting out the Rebels in the seventh inning.
The Lakers were led offensively by Jordan Tucker, and Thorson each with two hits and two runs scored as well as one RBI each, while Tanner Brend drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning.
The second game was a tighter on the scoreboard. DL led the entire game until the final inning when the 94 degree heat took its toll. The Rebels scored five runs in their last at-bats to force a 9-9 tie.
Jaylee Brandt led DL with three hits and three runs scored while Tucker added two hits and two runs. Hagen stayed hot driving in two clutch runs with two outs.
DL returned to Washington Park and defeated Wahpeton 14-4 Thursday, July 12 behind great pitching from Thorson and Ryan Bergum who combined to hold first place Wahpeton to five hits and four runs thru six innings.
The Laker offense was led by Tanner Brend who collected three hits, scored four runs and had three RBIs.
Detroit Lakes will head to St. Paul July 19 for the state 15U Babe Ruth tournament.
