Blues, Centaurs end Post 15 baseball season
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Moorhead Blues bounced back to claim a 12-2 victory in six innings over Detroit Lakes Wednesday in the opening round of the Minnesota Division Sub-State 14 Tournament in East Grand Forks.
DL took the early lead scoring both runs unearned. Tucker Jordan scored on a Jayden Heisler ball hit to third base misplayed. Heisler scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Blues answered with four first-inning runs, sparked by Carter Howell's RBI double.
"That was big ... we got our full momentum back," said Blues coach Bryant Bergeson. "They really didn't do anything offensively after that."
The Blues added four more runs in the fourth inning when Wyatt Gunkel and Caleb Saari each had RBI hits. Gunkel had a two-run double in the fifth inning. Caden Triggs ended the game in the sixth inning with a double to make it 12-2.
Gunkel went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Saari went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Starting pitcher Sterling Haphey allowed only two runs and four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
"He threw strikes and that is what I wanted," Bergeson said. "He got them to hit balls at our guys."
Blake Itzen took the loss surrendering eight runs on nine hits over four innings, striking out five and walking one.
The Blues, the No. 1 seed for this tournament, will play Perham in Thursday's 4 p.m. second-round game.Bemidji bats come alive in elimination game
Detroit Lakes grabbed a one-run lead in their opening at-bats against Bemidji 1-0 when Jordan Tucker walked and scored on a single by Blake Itzen, but the Centaurs erased it with a six-run third on the way to a 12-3 win to eliminate Post 15 from the playoffs. Thursday, July 26.
DL cut into the 6-1 deficit with two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Jayden Heisler to score and Hank Komrosky and Tucker.
Bemidji pounded out 13 hits to DL’s five. Matt Fitzgerald led the way going 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
