Gobblers get first Mid-State win at Detroit Lakes
The Aitkin Gobblers did not relinquish the lead, despite a number of Laker runs in the second half, in a 57-52 Mid-State Conference victory over Detroit Lakes Tuesday at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium.
The victory was the first for Aitkin since rejoining the conference this season after leaving in 1994.
The Gobblers grabbed an early lead at 15-13 on a bucket by Brooklyn Brezinsky and finished the first half on a 17-11 run to lead 32-24 at the break.
Aitkin shooting went cold after halftime and the Lakers took advantage closing to within a field goal on a pair of free throws by Bre Price to make the score 39-37 with nine minutes to play.
A basket by Mercedez Bellanger and a crazy make from Cortney Brodsho as she was falling to the floor knotted the game at 42-42 as the Lakers scored on back-to-back possessions.
Aitkin did just enough to keep DL at bay down the stretch.
Lauryn Manning cut the lead to 45-44 before getting her fourth foul.
Brezinsky drained a key three-pointer and Maggi Fellerman followed up with a field goal to push the Gobblers in front by six points 50-44.
Lauren Tschider beat an Aitkin defensive press and sank a baseline jumper and scored the next Laker basket to keep the spread four at 52-48 with 1:20 remaining.
DL pressed the inbounds play and forced a turnover but Manning’s shot was blocked by Kaija Davies. DL retained possession and Bellanger scored to force a one possession game trailing 52-50.
Manning fouled out and Davies made both of her free throws.
A Laker turnover on the offensive end sunk DL’s chances at completing the comeback and Aitkin shooters made five of six free throws to seal the game from the line.
Davies led all scorers with 25 points. She was solid from the line making 12 of 14 attempts. Fellerman scored in double figures with 14 points. Aitkin shot 21-32 (66 percent) from the line as a team. The Lakers made 12-22 (55 percent).
Tschider led DL with 15 points. Price scored 13 and Manning added nine.
Aitkin improves to 1-2 overall; the Lakers fall to 0-2 and travel to Fergus Falls Saturday, Dec. 9 for a 7:15 p.m. tip. The Otters are 3-0 with double digit wins over Albany, Rocori and Thief River Falls.
