Laker boys clinch Mid-State share

The Detroit Lakes boys basketball team captured seven straight Mid-State games, including a win at Staples Tuesday night, to earn a share of the conference championship with Pequot Lakes.

The Lakers used a 54-point first half to run away from Staples-Motley 90-54.

Jake Bettcher and Tanner Doppler led DL in scoring with 25 and 20 points, respectively. Logan Pratt added 16 points; Gabe Hanninen scored 10 as the fourth Laker shooter in double figures.

Hanninen and Doppler each made a trio of three-point baskets. Ethan Schweigart added a pair and scored eight points.

DL led 54-25 at halftime. The Lakers shot 8-13 (61 percent) from the line.

Josh Lombard and Griffin Webster led the Cardinals with 13 points each.

The victory was the sixth in the last seven games for the Lakers with one remaining on the regular season schedule Thursday, March 1 at home versus Bemidji.

DL (14-11) has struggled against Section 8AAA teams winning only one of seven games. The Lakers lost 67-49 at Bemidji in mid-December.

The game with the Lumberjacks is a potential preview of a first round playoff game. Bemidji is currently ranked third in the section; the Lakers are sixth.

Playoff seeding will be completed Saturday, March 3.
