Perham finishes season undefeated

The Perham boys basketball team overcame a slow start to cap off an undefeated regular season with a 59-54 victory over Pequot Lakes on March 2 in Pequot Lakes.

The host Patriots gave the Yellowjackets a rude welcome when they raced out a 14-2 lead in the first half.

However, the early shooting struggles gave way late in the first half and into the second half. The Yellowjackets closed out the first half with a surge, taking a 22-20 lead in to the break.

Perham eventually ran their lead to double figures in the second half, leading by as many as 13 points. However, the Patriots continued to battle and cut the lead down to four in the final seconds of the second half. However, Perham closed it out in the closing minutes, securing the 59-54 win.

Perham’s Jenson Beachy paced the Yellowjackets with 16 points. Josh Jeziorski and Martin LaFond added 13 each. Carter Cresap finished in double figures as well, ending with 12.

The Yellowjackets shot 47 percent from the field and hit on 52 percent of their 3-pointers. The Yellowjackets were 10 of 19 from the 3-point line with Beachy hitting a team high four of them. LaFond and Cresap added a pair of triples as well.

Chase Larson finished with 18 points, while Zach Sjoblad ended with 16.

The Yellowjackets captured their first undefeated regular season with the victory, finishing out the season with a 26-0 record. The Yellowjackets secured the No. 1 seed for the South Subsection for Section 8AA. They will begin the second season with a home game against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the first round at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium, beginning at 7 p.m.
