Sophomore golfer Kate Smith led the Nebraska women’s golf team to a 10th place finish in the third and final round at the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday.

Smith recorded a career-best 54-hole score of 212, besting her previous score of 214 set in 2017 spring competition. Smith’s 212 is just three strokes off of Nebraska’s 54-hole school record of 209. The Detroit Lakes, Minn. native, Smith, tied for seventh overall, her third top ten finish in four tournaments this fall.

For her efforts, Smith was named to co-Big Ten player of the week, along with Wisconsin’s Lexi Harkins. It was the second time Smith has earned the distinction this season.

This is the third Golfer of the Week honor of Smith's career, tied for the most of any Husker with Cassie Deeg, who earned three honors in 2013-14. This is also Nebraska's third Big Ten Golfer of the Week this fall, tying for the most honors earned in the fall season in NU history.

The Huskers shot an overall 876 at the tournament (290-287-299), managing a 10th place finish of 19 competing teams. Senior Audrey Judd, Olathe, Kan., shot a season-low round with a second-round score of 69 (76-69-73-218). Before Monday’s second round, Judd had shot a season-low 70 twice.

Sophomore Annie Sritragul (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 29th shooting 72-73-77-222, while the Thiele sisters rounded out the Huskers’ lineup. Sophomore Haley Thiele, Wahoo, Neb., tied for 60th, 73-74-78-225 at Pinehurst. While freshman Hannah Thiele showed improvement, posting a career-best round score of 73 (78-73-78-229), to tie for 72nd.

Competing as an individual outside of NU’s lineup, Noor Ahmed (Folsom, Calif.), tied for 22nd, shooting an even 72 each round, a career-best low-round score and a career-best 54-hole score for the true freshman (72-72-72-216). Ahmed had nine birdies at the Pinehurst Challenge.

Kate Smith and the Big Red will return to action on Oct. 22-24 at the UNLV Collegiate Showdown, the final tournament of the fall season.
