IPFW makes only hit of the game count in 2-0 win over NDSU in Summit softball

FARGO – The wind was blowing in and the pitchers from North Dakota State and Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne were throwing smoke. Lighting any kind of offensive fire looked near impossible in the Summit League softball tournament winner’s bracket game this afternoon.

It may have been Bison vs. Mastodons, but in all reality it was a matchup between right-handed Whitney Johnson vs. left-handed Miranda Kramer. But all it took was IPFW’s only hit of the game. Hillary Kartman’s two-run double in the top of the seventh inning propelled IPFW to a 2-0 win and a berth in Saturday's championship game.

NDSU moved to a loser's bracket game at 6 tonight at Ellig Sports Complex.

It took until the top of the seventh inning before IPFW had a runner reach second, the result of NDSU second baseman Cheyenne Garcia, who was covering first, not being able to handle a throw on Larissa Franklin’s bunt. The two-base error came with nobody out.

One walk and one out later, Kartman took a 3-2 pitch to right center for two RBIs.
