Boys XC runners-up at home invite

Peyton Nordby and Dane Galloway battle down the finishing chute to a photo finish at the Detroit Lakes Invitational held at Lakeview Golf Course Thursday, Sept. 6. Robert Williams / Tribune

Detroit Lakes junior Peyton Nordby and Alexandria junior Dane Galloway battled to the finish line in a photo finish at the Detroit Lakers Cross Country Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course Thursday, Sept. 6.

“It was pretty close, but it feels good to get up front,” said Nordby.

The duo crossed the line in the same time of 18:02.6 with both runners giving their all to a finish that roused the crowd down the final 100 meters.

“It was fast,” said Nordby. “The first hill killed me on the second lap and I fell behind but made myself faster.”

The runners run up the fairway of the finishing hole at Lakeview with the first hill ending past the 18th tee box and right of the fifth hole tee box in a slow climb.

Coming downhill near the driving range and clubhouse to the final turn, Norbdy made his move in the final 800 meters to get to the chute and race Galloway to a virtual tie.

Senior Tanner Olson put two Lakers in the top three with a third place time of 18:20 and junior Grant Fritch-Gallatin (18:27.7) placed eighth as the third Laker in the top 10.

The team competition was a two-team battle between the Cardinals and Lakers. Alexandria won by seven places scoring 34 to DL’s 41 with four runners in the top 10.

All five scoring runners for Detroit Lakes had top 20 finishes in the top third of a field of 61 racers. Senior Tucker Strawsell just missed the top 10 in 11th place running 18:48.4. Fellow junior Blake Weber ran a time of 19:21.3 to finish in 17th position.

Frazee placed fifth in the team standings scoring 124 led by senior Grady Larsen (18:48.8) in 12th place.

Lake Park-Audubon finished in seventh with 196 points. Senior Nicholas Donovan (19:56.6) led the Raiders placing 27th overall.
