Frazee clinches No. 2 seed with win

MIKE MOLTZAN runs over Red Lake County's Mike Klein for a touchdown Thursday in the Fargodome.

Frazee's Mike Moltzan rushed for 209 yards and scored two touchdowns to propel Frazee-Vergas to a 32-20 win over Red Lake County on Thursday in Minnesota high school football at the Fargodome.

Moltzan scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter to give Frazee-Vergas the lead and sealed the win with a 15-yard score in the fourth.

Frazee-Vergas built an early 16-0 lead with a pair of touchdowns from Kody Sorenson.

Red Lake County then scored 20 unanswered points.

Red Lake County's Garrett Schmitz scored two touchdowns, including a 62-yard rushing score. Robbie Glass also scored for Red Lake County.

Rebels down Vikings

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton owned the first half Thursday at the Fargodome.

That strong start sparked the Rebels to an 18-8 victory against Pelican Rapids in Heart O'Lakes Conference football.

"The first half is what we are capable of doing," D-G-F coach Tony Soderberg said.

The Rebels (6-2) raced to an 18-0 halftime lead behind 164 first-half rushing yards from senior running back Bennett Mercil.

D-G-F didn't allow a first down until the third quarter. The Rebels limited Pelican Rapids (4-4) to 30 yards in the first half on 11 plays.

"They got off the ball better and ran harder than we did," Pelican Rapids coach Dave Haugen said. "It's a pretty simple game when you can put those ingredients together."

The Rebels earned the top seed for the Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 playoffs. D-G-F hosts Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Tuesday in the first round. Pelican Rapids hosts United North Central in the first round of the playoffs.

Mercil finished with 206 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 attempts. His three-yard touchdown run with nine seconds to play in the first half gave the Rebels an 18-0 lead.

Pelican Rapids scored the lone touchdown in the second half. Tucker Forsgren hauled in a 23-yard scoring pass from Devin Schell with three minutes, 38 seconds to play in the third quarter. That cut the D-G-F lead to 18-8.

"We still didn't play four full quarters, but we did come out and play good, intense hard-hitting football," Soderberg said.
