The efficient No. 2 Frazee baseball team overcame a bit of a cold start to advance out of the Section 6-1A first round Tuesday, as the Hornets downed visiting No. 7 Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale by the score of 6-2.

Using all their eight hits effectively, the Hornets (16-4) were able to collect a big four-run fourth inning to bolt out from underneath a 2-1 deficit, while senior pitcher Jacob Galbrecht was his usual consistent self for the complete-game victory.

"We had just enough hits to score our runs," said Frazee head coach Dustin Geiser. "We didn't leave many runners on base. Offense has been a strength for us and when we get runners on base, we usually score them."

The fourth inning brought a little trouble for the Raiders (4-14), as pitcher Preston Riewer had three walks in the frame, including a leadoff one to senior first baseman Dan Janu.

That led to the rally, with Galbrecht eventually helping his cause with a two-run triple over the right fielder's head to put Frazee on top 5-2.

"We were fairly aggressive on the base pads, trying to stretch singles into doubles or triples, or trying to steal bases," Geiser said. "It's easier to do that, so you don't always need the big hit."

The Hornets had two stolen bases, while taking more bases on three wild pitches by Riewer, who lasted five innings, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out three.

Tyler Wacker added Frazee's sixth run in the bottom of the fifth, after Janu led off with a single, to eventually score on a sacrifice fly.

The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, after recording three hits and a walk off of Galbrecht, but after that, the Frazee hurler limited B-H/V to just two more hits and no more free bases.

"That's what Jake does, he gets the job done and is our Steady Eddy on the mound," Geiser said of his starting pitcher. "He mixed his pitches up well and made them put the ball in play, where our defense made the plays (with no errors)."

Galbrecht was also the leader at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBIs, while number two hitter Hayden Hoskins was 2-3.

The Hornets will play No. 3 Pine River-Backus (16-6) Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Sebeka.

Frazee was a 13-3 victor over the Tigers May 8.

"We need to throw strikes and play defense, because if you do that, you are in every game," Geiser said of the keys to a playoff run.

The Tigers were a 1-0 winner over No. 6 Menahga Tuesday.

In the upper bracket, No. 1 New York Mills (19-0) was a 2-0 winner over No. 9 Hillcrest Lutheran. They will face No. 4 Sebeka (10-10), which was a 2-1 winner over No. 5 Lake Park-Audubon.

The winner of those two games will play at 5 p.m. Thursday in Sebeka, which starts the double elimination portion of the tournament.

In the south half, No. 8 Ashby was an upset special winner over top-seeded Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 10-6 and will face No. 4 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Thursday in Morris.

No. 7 Eagle Valley also was an upset maker, as they downed No. 2 Brandon/Evansville 11-5 and will face No. 3 Ortonville, which defeated No. 6 Parkers Prairie 8-6.

The Section 6-1A championship will be played in Fergus Falls Thursday, June 7.
