Incoming NDSU freshman and 2018 Detroit Lakes high school grad Maddie Herzog finished in a tie for fourth place overall at the Minnesota State Junior Girls' Championship at Monticello Country Club in Monticello Tuesday, July 10.

Herzog (73) held the first round lead by one stroke over Janice Kim of Timber Creek Golf Club and Camille Kuznik of Lester Park Golf Course.

Kuznik dropped two strokes off her opening day score shooting 72 (+1) to claim a one stroke victory at +4 for the tournament (146) over Emma Welch (147) of Brackett’s Crossing Country Club. Welch made a jump from fourth to second place on day two. Both she and Kuznik had the low rounds Tuesday.

Kim placed third shooting 74 for a two-day total of 148, followed by Herzog and Aayushi Sarkar in fourth. Herzog shot 73-79 to score 152; Sarkar followed up an opening day 78 with 74 to hold fourth place both days.

DL’s Shelby Busker finished tied for 15th (82-81 163) and Anna Cihak was 22nd (82-86 168).

Herzog leads after first round

Herzog held a one stroke lead after day one of play. Her low round of two-over 73 was a stroke better than both Kim and Kuznik.

Herzog birdied three holes on the day: the par four ninth, the par three 14th and the par five finishing hole to counter five bogeys.

Kim struggled on the front nine bogeying six of nine but reeled off three straight birdies on holes 12-14 on the back side to get within a stroke of the lead.

Kuznik had three birdies, all on par fours and six bogeys in her round.

Busker and Cihak tied for 13th place overall after shooting matching scored of +11 (82).

There are 10 DL boys playing in the Minnesota State Junior Boys' Championship at The Bridges in Winona.

Hunter Burnside finished day one with the top score of nine-over 80 for a share of 74th place.
