Football: Hornets feel sting of defeat

Frazee running back Jesse Trusty finds an opening created by his offensive line against Red Lake Central Friday, during the Hornets’ Homecoming game. BRIAN BASHAM/DL NEWSPAPERS

Frazee’s Homecoming game featured two of the most physical football teams in the conference Friday, Red Lake Central and the Hornets each came into the tilt with 3-1 records, with the only losses coming from Mahnomen, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A football.

RLC was able to post a zero on the Hornets in the fourth quarter, while scoring the decisive touchdown with just 2:24 left in the game for a 20-14 triumph.

“The loss was a bitter pill to swallow, but there were still a lot of positives that came from the game,” said Frazee head coach Jim Rader. “Offensively, the only penalty we had came on the first play of the game.

“Statistically, we produced more yards against the RLC defense than any team outside of Mahnomen and Mahnomen logged a mere 20 yards more offense against the Rebel defense.”

Frazee also saw its ability to play as a group, as RLC keyed on Hesston Bachmann early and we answered with a combination of Jesse Trusty, Austin Torma, Cory Wokasch and Matt Tangen moving the chains.

Bachmann still was potent, after rushing for a game high 159 yards on 14 carries.

“Defensively, we saw our kids rise to the challenge to produce big stops for us in tough situations, and our stats showed a couple new names appearing high on the tackle chart,” Rader said. “Our big guys really dug in deep a couple times when we needed it, and it showed their competitiveness.

“Ultimately we played a very solid game, showed a lot of discipline, but suffered a couple key turnovers.”

The Hornets now prepare to take on 5-0 Pine River-Backus Friday.

“The last time we suffered a tough loss, our players responded with an excellent follow up game,” Rader added. “Our goal is to do the same this coming week.”
