Track Preview: Hornet boys a bit green

After graduating a big 2013 senior class, the Frazee boys’ track and field team will have to replenish its depth for the upcoming season.

The Hornets will have two seniors on the roster in Jesse Trusty and Tristan Watchorn, while having 16 out for the team in grades nine through 11th.

“Our numbers are about average this year, but we only have two seniors,” said Frazee head boys’ coach Brian Tangen. “We lost a lot of points to graduation, so we have some big shoes to fill. We are not real deep.”

Trusty will be one of the main contributors in the sprints, while Watchorn brings valuable distance experience.

The junior class also boasts of some good experience in Colton Olson (distance), Brady Bellefeuille (jumps and mid-distance), Roger Thorp and Garrett Malstrom (throws).

“We also have a good crew of sophomores in the sprints and hurdles,” Tangen included. “I think we can put together a pretty good 3,200-meter relay team and a 400 relay team. We have some work to do in the 800 relay and the 1,600 relay, though.”

With depth being an issue, progression through the season will be vital for those who are out.

“We have no clear favorites for getting to state, but I feel we do have a couple of individuals and a relay that have a shot to advance,” Tangen said. “We just have to wait and see what we can do when we get outside.”

The Hornets will start their season in Perham, Friday, April 11.
