Track and Field Preview: Lady Hornets to rely on youth

The sprinting and distance events will pace the Frazee girls’ track and field teams for the 2014 season, as good talent and experience reign in those events.

Although the Lady Hornets have a small senior class out, two of them in Ashley Laine and Hannah Brady will anchor the sprinting events, while junior captain Taylor Wutzke will join them in the short-distance races.

The distance events will be a bit younger, but a strength, as the Morgan sisters, Kaitlin (sophomore) and Ellie (eighth grader), along with freshman Kiara Dekarske and sophomore Holly McCamant will join them in the 800 through 3,200-meter races.

“Our distance should be strong,” said Frazee girls’ coach Jim Jacobson.

Hurdles will be strong, as well, with Laine returning as a seasoned hurdler, along with junior Briana Blauert and sophomore Maddie Rue.

“Since we have good sprinters and distance runners, our relays also should benefit,” Jacobson said.

“We should be able to fill all the events in every meet.”

Wutzke will be a leader in the field events in the triple jump, while Brady will take on the pole vaulting duties.

Frazee was moved from Section 6-1A to Section 8-1A, which includes Barnesville, Cass Lake-Bena, Christian Home Academy, Clearbrook-Gonvick, Crookston, D-G-F, East Grand Forks, Fertile-Beltrami, Lake Park-Audubon, Nevis, Park Christian, Park Rapids, Roseau, TrekNorth, Walker/H-A, Mahnomen/Waubun, Warroad, Norman County, Bagley/Fosston, Fisher/EGF Sacred heart/Climax, Badger/GMR, Grygla-Gatzke, Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal, Lake of the Woods, Northome, Red Lake County and West Marshall.
