Laker girls' tennis preview

The 2013 version of the Detroit Lakes girls’ tennis team will be led into the season by first-year head coach Tanner Beauchman, who brings a stout tennis pedigree to the program.

Beauchman, who replaced Kris Swenson as head coach, has solid tennis coaching experience, after being the head coach at Grand Forks Central for the last several years, while also coaching in Wichita, Kan., as well.

He is currently playing club tennis at Valley City State University, N.D., as a graduate student and helped the team qualify for Nationals.

So helping build a consistent winner in DL is right up Beauchman’s alley.

“One of my goals is to start getting a Middle School presence in the (tennis) program,” said Beauchman, who teaches English in the junior high. “That will help sustain the program throughout coming years.”

Beauchman comes into the 2013 season with some good talent and skillful players, which will be led by sophomore Dani Unruh, who had a breakout season in 2012.

Unruh will play as the Lakers’ top singles player, a position she held down for much of last year and played well there.

“Dani is a very good player,” Beauchman said. “She plays at a very high level and what I’ve seen from her in practice, she should have a good season.”

Another experienced player will hold the No. 2 singles slot as the team’s lone senior in India Fritz, who will also see time at doubles, as well.

Sophomore Emma Maguire is slated as DL’s No. 3 singles player, with Stella Foltz also entering the mix at singles, along with juniors Sydney Fritz, Devree Bunnis and Sydney Fritz.

Junior Emily Seebold will lead the doubles contingent and will be paired with some of the singles players.

“It’s still pretty early to form our doubles teams, so I’ll have to see who plays well with each other,” Beauchman said. “It will be a work in progress.”

The Lakers opened the season in Staples-Motley Wednesday and will be in Perham Thursday. The home opener is Monday, Aug. 26, when they host Staples-Motley and Moorhead in a triangular, starting at 9:30 a.m.
